Saronsberg takes top honours at 2015 SAWi awards
Saronsberg takes top honours
Saronsberg did it again when this Tulbagh wine cellar received top honours at the 2015 SAWi (South African Wine Index) awards with no less than four top awards.
Saronsberg received the trophy for Winery of the Year, Best Red Wine Producer, Best Rhone Style Blend, as well as Best Viognier. This follows on previous successes at this competition, including Winery of the Year in 2010 and Best Red Wine Producer in 2013, confirming Saronsberg’s reputation of excellence when it comes to making wine.
Held at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, the SAWi awards aim to give credit to the wines and farms that consistently do well within the local and international arena. All South African wines are evaluated and given a score derived from a multi-phase algorithm to help wine lovers identify consistent excellence.
2015 also saw Saronsberg being awarded Gold and Platinum awards for its Saronsberg Shiraz, Provenance Shiraz and Provenance Red while Dewaldt Heyns and Chris Immelman received recognition for Best Winemaker and Viticulturist respectively.
“These accolades are a testimony to the team’s relentlessness in the pursuit of excellence,” says winemaker and cellar master, Dewaldt Heyns. “These awards speak volumes about the hard work and commitment of our team. Not only in building the Saronsberg brand, but also in maintaining the high standards we have set for ourselves since we have opened our doors.”

Saronsberg is a celebrated wine cellar located in the Cape Winelands village of Tulbagh. A devastating fire early in 2003 resulted in the building of a new cellar, the planting of new vineyards and the appointment of winemaker Dewaldt Heyns. Today, Saronsberg is known for its excellent portfolio of wines, particularly the Shiraz. The rich, fertile soils and climate are matched with skill in viticulture and in the cellar, which was recognised with Heyns’s induction as member of the esteemed Cape Winemakers Guild, an association of some of South Africa’s finest winemakers. Saronsberg participates in a number of environmentally responsible programmes, including the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative Certificate, WIETA accreditation and IPW.
SAWi’s score takes into account a specific wine’s best results over multiple vintages by using national and international accolades received as well as authoritative reviews, trophies and Top 10 listings. The collective wisdom of the judging panels, wine experts and the wider wine industry is distilled into a single figure that drowns out much of the subjective noise, making it easy to distinguish truly extraordinary wines.
